Given
that the VFR scenery is fixed as summer and the photo was taken in autumn
I think the comparison above shows that FS2004 with Terrain Mesh and VFR
photoscenery added is indeed "as real as it gets".

Simulator 2004 (FS9) + Terrain Mesh + VFR Photo scenery - UK:
Flight Simulator X was released in September 2006. First reports are that the in-built terrain mesh is an improvement on previous versions but that a poweful PC is de rigeur. If your PC isn't powerful, or you want a full range of addons now, perhaps FSX isnt the way to go until a litle later. Luckily many of the addon makers are promising patches to adapt products for FSX. VFR scenery now available for FSX
